The ongoing headlines about new anti-smoking laws, as well as tobacco tax hikes aimed at both raising revenues and cutting smoking rates, are not diminishing one iota.

More than ever, governments around the world at every level (federal, regional and municipal) are both taking their cut of tobacco sales and trying to reduce the number of people who smoke.

This brings up an interesting point, when it comes to cigars. Most cigar lovers don’t smoke cigars in the same way an addicted cigarette smoker does.

Let’s get one thing clear: Cigar smoking is dangerous. Those who do smoke cigars know that. Most smoke just one or two sticks a week. Most do not inhale. And if you’re like me, you view cigars as a guilty pleasure. I do like my cigars, and I enjoy my time with them. But I really don’t smoke them all that much; that way, I enjoy them even more when I do.

Most cigar smokers are not like cigarette smokers. We are not hooked. We are courteous when it comes to our cigars. But because of onerous laws aimed primarily at cigarette smokers (although some taxes are squarely targeted at us), we get hosed as well.

I had a bit of trouble conceiving this poll, because there’s so many things that go into it, it’s tough to come up with just one poll question and a few concise choices. So I decided to make the actual question and choices very simple, and to let you and others in the cigar/Stogie’d community battle out the details in the comments section. So, here’s the poll:

What do you think? Specifically, how far do you think society should go in regulating cigars? Are cigar smokers really different from cigarette smokers? Chat it up in the Comments section.
